At the time I received this assignment, the first signs of this book making big waves and big sales internationally were clear. I quickly agreed with the editor that the setting of the novel is strong and can drive the decision for the cover. The editor was happy with the image I had proposed, but I knew that although the photograph was strong I had a very long way to go to manipulate the image to allow for the title to take the middle of the cover with the grand leading I wanted it to have. To add to the retouching complexity, I was keen to deliver a wraparound image that allows for the back blurb to rest legible on the photo. Quite late in the process I noticed that the male fisherman from the original photograph will need some work too in order to fit the bill so I moved to Procreate in order to deal with the posture and the reflection in the water in a more intuitive way. The result of all our efforts is that the book is still one of the best selling books for the publisher along with the many positive reviews of the cover design.
