Designing the cover for Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro was a challenge a joy and a journey. So many themes to pick upon and all feeling too prosaic for this complex layered novel. The reproduction, the replicants being encouraged to paint, the realism and the flesh like nature of the closeup of the paining all fitted the bill somehow. This one was a real collaboration with the editor. Bouncing ideas and trying out approaches. I designed over twenty options. The title over the eye was a tough decision to take and one that had an equal amount of positive and negative reactions. But it was one that sparkled conversation. I worked hard on the composition and I tried many options until I stoped on one that felt both minimal and loud at the same time.
